• Promouvoir une compréhension intégrée des mangroves à travers la science, les savoirs locaux, y compris ceux détenus par les femmes, et les dynamiques territoriales ;
• Partager les innovations technologiques et les outils géospatiaux pour la cartographie et la surveillance participative et inclusive de ces écosystèmes ;
• Mettre en lumière les mécanismes de restauration écologique et de financement durable, notamment par le biais de mécanismes de paiement pour des services environnementaux, dont le carbone bleu, qui promeuvent l’intégration des femmes dans les dispositifs de gouvernance, de prise de décision et de répartition des bénéfices;
• Valoriser les initiatives communautaires, les pratiques endogènes et les expériences inspirantes de gouvernance locale, en mettant en avant les contributions spécifiques des femmes, leurs savoirs traditionnels et leur leadership dans la conservation et la résilience des mangroves ;

ABOUT

The Mangrove Ecosystems Symposium

This symposium will be an interdisciplinary dialogue opportunity between stakeholders, researchers, decision-makers, community leaders, and civil society organizations on the topic of mangrove ecosystems. It seeks to improve understanding of the ecological, socio-economic, and climate-related roles of mangrove ecosystems, while highlighting innovative payment mechanisms for environmental services—including blue carbon—as pillars for conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development in coastal areas.
More specifically, the symposium will :

  • • Promote an integrated understanding of mangroves by considering the latest science, local knowledge from communities (including women), and territorial dynamics
  • • Share technological innovations and geospatial tools for participatory and inclusive mapping and monitoring of these ecosystems
  • • Highlight ecological restoration and sustainable financing via payment mechanisms for environmental services—including blue carbon—while promoting the inclusion of women in governance, decision-making, and benefit-sharing arrangements
  • • Promote community initiatives, local practices, and inspiring experiences in local governance, highlighting the specific contributions of women, their traditional knowledge, and their leadership in mangrove conservation and resilience
  • • Foster practical field-based learning related to the use of certain mangrove management and monitoring tools
Designed to promote knowledge sharing and action, this symposium will combine plenary sessions, practical workshops, community panels, interactive exhibitions, and field visits.. It celebrates a co-creation approach for fair and sustainable solutions in local territories.

Natur’ELLES: an innovative project aimed at helping women and their vulnerable communities adapt to climate change and preserve mangroves in Senegal.

SOCODEVI has received funding from the Government of Canada, through Global Affairs Canada (GAC), to implement the Natur’ELLES project in the Sine-Saloum and Casamance deltas.
The Natur’ELLES project aims to strengthen the adaptation of women and their vulnerable communities to climate change in these regions. It focuses on adopting Nature-based Solutions (NbS) to restore and conserve the biodiversity of mangrove coastlines, while promoting more inclusive and equitable governance of natural resources—particularly in Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Indigenous and Community Conserved Areas (ICCAs or APACs).

The project also aims to enhance women’s benefits from mangrove conservation activities by strengthening essential ecosystem services (such as fish productivity), reducing coastal erosion, and combating soil salinization.

With technical support from the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the project is strengthening local natural resource management capacities, implementing restoration and awareness-raising campaigns, and promoting climate-friendly energy and production alternatives. SOCODEVI’s PERFORMCOOP approach also supports the consolidation of women’s economic groups to develop sustainable income-generating activities.

Finally, a pilot payment for environmental services (PES) mechanism, supported by an economic assessment (SAVi) and geared toward the blue carbon market, will be established to maximize the project’s socio-economic benefits and promote sustainability.

As part of the implementation of the Natur’ELLES project partners, SOCODEVI—together with IUCN, NEBEDAY, CASADES, CAREM, REFEPAS, Tayo Climate Partners, IISD, and the Directorate of Marine Protected Areas—are organizing this symposium to engage stakeholders on the main challenges facing mangrove ecosystems.
